8 cups tart peeled and sliced apples (about 6 medium apples)
2 1/4 cups brown sugar, divided
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup butter, softened
2 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup finely chopped walnuts, divided
Vanilla ice cream for serving, optional
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan or dish.
Place the apples evenly over the bottom of the prepared pan/dish.
Combine the cinnamon with the 1/4 cup of brown sugar and sprinkle over the apples.
In a bowl, cream the butter with the remaining 2 cups of brown sugar; add in the eggs. Stir in the flour and 1/2 cup of the walnuts; spread over the apples. Sprinkle the remaining walnuts overall.
Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes or until the apples are tender.
Best when served warm and with ice cream, if desired.
